Blood Tests

At The Surgery

We offer blood tests to all of our Patients registered at the Surgery.

  • Before you book a blood test please ensure that a GP has ordered a blood test request for you or you have a blood form from a Consultant.
  • Patients under the age of 13 must arrange a blood test at Poole Hospital. (01202 442478)
  • INR (Warfarin) blood tests are done on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings only.

Blood appointments are with our HCA:

  • Please ensure you are well hydrated before your blood test.
  • Wearing a loose fitting or sleeveless top makes the procedure a lot quicker.

Blood appointments at our treatment centre:

  • Our Treatment Centre is based at Shelley Manor Medical Centre, Private Suite. You may be required to attend your blood test appointment here; our reception staff will check that you are able to before emaking a booking.

Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals

Please also note from Monday 3rd June the Royal Bournemouth Hospital will no longer provide a walk-in service for patients with blood tests requested by their GP. GP patients will be offered a booked appointment.

Urgent blood tests will be provided by the GP.

From Monday 1st July the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Christchurch Hospital will no longer provide any blood tests requested by a GP.

For hospital requested blood tests you can attend Bournemouth Hospital, the Department is in the West Wing of the main hospital and in the Out Patients Department at Christchurch Hospital.

Pathology Bournemouth: Opening Times 8:00am – 4:30pm Monday – Friday

Pathology Christchurch: Opening Times 9:00am – 3:30pm Monday – Friday

Non NHS Services

Non NHS Medical Examinations

Some services are not covered by the NHS and a charge will be made in line with the BMA scale of fees. These include medical examinations e.g.:

  • HGV licence
  • Employment medicals
  • Driving insurance etc

as well as certain certificates e.g.:

  • Private insurance claims
  • Private sick notes
  • Holiday cancellations etc

Specialised Services

The Practice believes that prevention is better than cure and is pleased to offer a wide range of Health Promotion Clinics tailored to meet our patient’s needs.

Asthma Clinic

All asthmatic patients are encouraged to attend the Asthma Clinic (even when well). This is run by Kirsty Kingsley and Maisie Lane.

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Clinic

Provides support to patients who suffer Respiratory Problems such as Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema. The Clinic provides patients with regular review of their condition, measurement of respiratory flow, smoking advice and an assessment of treatment.

Diabetes Clinic

Kirsty Kingsley and Maisie Lane. offer a comprehensive screening, monitoring and support service for diabetic patients

Baby Vaccination and Immunisation Clinic

Parents are automatically informed when their child is due for their next injection and an appointment is given to attend the clinic which is held monthly. Appointments can be made at alternative times if necessary. Here is the current recommended immunisation schedule:

  • 2 Months – diphtheria, tetanus, polio, pertussis & Hib (DTP-Hib) and meningitis C and pneumococcal.
  • 3 Months – diphtheria, tetanus, polio, pertussis & Hib (DTP-Hib) and meningitis C.
  • 4 Months – diphtheria, tetanus, polio, pertussis & Hib (DTP-Hib) and meningitis C and pneumococcal.
  • 12 Months – Hib and Meningitis C reinforcer.
  • 13 Months – Mumps, measles and rubella (German Measles) – one injection only (MMR) and Pneumoccocal
  • 3 – 5yrs – Polio, Diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis (DTaP). Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR).
  • 10 – 14 – BCG (against tuberculosis)
  • 16 – Diphtheria and tetanus (Td), Polio.
Cervical Smear

Female Patients are invited to attend at regular intervals for a smear. This is a preventative test to prevent cancer before it starts. Appointments are available with the Practice Nurses and Doctors.

Family Planning

Advice on contraception is provided by all the Doctors during normal surgery hours. Emergency contraception is available. 

Flu Vaccinations

Flu vaccinations are recommended for patients with heart, chest or kidney disease, asthma, diabetes and other chronic diseases. It is also recommended for all patients over 65 and for residents of nursing and residential homes. And some children.

Hypertension and CHD (Coronary Heart Disease) Clinics

You may record your blood pressure without the need to book an appointment with a GP or Practice Nurse. This facility will release more valuable appointments for the benefit of our patients. Once taken, these readings are passed to your GP for review & you will only need to be seen if your GP requests this.

Maternity & Preconception Care

Please follow the link below to self-refer to the midwife, who will be in touch to arrange an appointment between 8 to 10 weeks.

Minor Surgery

Arrangements for minor surgery are made with the Doctor.

Pneumonia Vaccinations

Pneumonia vaccinations are recommended for patients over 65 and for those patients with chronic diseases. One vaccination lasts a lifetime.

Over 75 Years

 Annual medical screening is offered to elderly patients.

SmokeStop

 Advice on how to give up smoking is offered by the Practice Nurses and GPs, who will refer you to the local service for group therapy or one to one.

Travel Advice

 The Practice Nurses offer a full range of immunisation and advice on travel abroad. Please make an appointment with the Practice Nurse to discuss which injections are required and give yourself plenty of time to have them before you leave – at least 6 weeks. A charge may be made for some immunisations.

Well Person

 The screening includes weight, dietary advice, blood pressure, urine and cholesterol testing as well as advice about smoking, breast examination and cervical smears. Chlamydia screening is also available.
